Scope Out a Lucrative Career as a Gastroenterologist

Friday January 25, 2008
Gastroenterologists, also known as “GI’s”, are physicians who treat the digestive system. GI doctors may have been the “butt” of a few jokes, but they’re laughing all the way to the bank. Plus, the treatment they provide for a number of serious illnesses is no laughing matter. The sometimes misunderstood field of Gastroenterology, with an average annual income of about a half million dollars, according to the Medical Group Management Association, is one of the more lucrative medical specialties in which to practice.

You may still be wondering if you should be a gastroenterologist, and would it be the right career for you? For some answers, Dr. Michael Cohen, a GI of 18 years, provides a first-hand overview of a gastroenterologist's career. Dr. Cohen discusses a few industry trends, as well as what he’s liked most about his career as a physician practicing gastroenterology. If you enjoy reading the interview, you may also want to check out the gastroenterologist career profile.
