Medical Coders: Cure for the Common Code

Sunday November 23, 2008
Medical coders play an essential role in the financial success of a medical practice. Medical coders help doctors’ offices obtain payment and reimbursement from medical insurance companies and patients. By processing, reviewing, and submitting medical claims, medical coders help doctors and hospitals get paid accurately, and on time, to help maintain an efficient cash flow through the practice, or medical facility.

The title as a medical “coder” is based on the thousands of numerical codes that represent each procedure, service, and diagnosis provided during a patient’s visit. Medical providers utilize these codes universally on all medical claims, and the codes are recognized by the insurers to help them to determine the corresponding payment amount due.

A career as a medical coder may be for you if you have an eye for detail, particularly with numbers, and if you prefer a desk job (as opposed to a more clinical, patient-focused career). Additionally, any qualified high school graduate who has the time and the means to complete a coding course can become a certified coder, which allows medical coding jobs to be accessible to many people who may not have a college degree. Learn more about the important role of medical coders, and how to become certified as a medical coder, in the medical coder career profile.
