If you are as passionate about social media as you are about healthcare, you may be a great candidate for a career in the emerging profession of hospital-based social media specialists. Now that hospitals have taken the social media plunge, demand for healthcare social media specialists should increase in the coming years.
Of course, there is a lot more to the job as a hospital social media manager than tweeting, updating, and blogging. Social media managers at hospitals help design and execute complex, strategic marketing campaigns via social media. Some social media specialists may also be responsible for training hospital staff and affiliated physicians on various social media skills, policies, and best practices, helping them to build their own social media presence in addition to the larger corporate presence of the hospital facility itself.
A background in communications, marketing, public relations, or healthcare is a great foundation for the role of hospital social media specialist. Additional skills and expertise in writing, public speaking, training, marketing, public relations, plus some basic web programming (HTML) are ideal too.
At many hospitals, social media is still handled by an existing marketing or PR associate already on staff at the hospital. However, as social media utilization grows, the need to hire a full-time social media specialist will become more pressing. Other job titles or similar roles may be Community Manager, or Interactive Marketing Specialist, or Internet Marketing Manager/Specialist.
