October was a fairly average month for healthcare employment growth. All sectors of healthcare added jobs except for nursing and residential facilities, which lost about 600 jobs, according to today's report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Healthcare added a total of about 30,500 jobs for the month. Ambulatory care grew in the following areas:
- Medical offices: +11,200 jobs
- Outpatient care centers: +1,700 jobs
- Home health care: +7,900 jobs
Hospitals added 6,200 jobs in October.
The unemployment rate in the healthcare industry is 5.5 percent, down from 5.6 percent this time last year.
Meanwhile, the nation's overall unemployment rate remains unchanged for October, at 7.9 percent. Other areas that grew in October were professional and business services and retail trade, while manufacturing was flat and mining lost jobs.
