Definition: ECFMG is an acronym that stands for Educational Commission on Foreign Medical Graduates. Any prospective physician who graduates from a medical school outside of the US must first pass the ECFMG process prior to entering residency training, in order to practice legally in the US. The ECFMG process includes a verification of the candidate's international medical degree, and an exam, also called the ECFMG. Once the ECFMG is passed, then a physician is eligible for entry into an American residency training program, which is required even if the physician trained and practiced medicine internationally.
