What is Mohs Surgery?

By Andrea Santiago, About.com

Mohs surgery is a surgical procedure that was developed in the 1930s by a general surgeon, Dr. Frederic Mohs, according to the American Society for Mohs Surgery.

Mohs surgery is now primarily performed by dermatologists, as a cure for basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers, particularly those on the face.

Throughout the surgery, tissue is carefully examined under a microscope and tested for presence of cancerous cells, to ensure that all of the cancer has been removed.
