Hospital Jobs: As Seen on TV?

Thursday January 17, 2008
Have you ever noticed how many hospital-based dramas are on TV lately? Hospitals seem to be a very popular setting for suspenseful, enthralling TV shows, because there is always something interesting happening in a hospital. A hospital is a microcosm of society, with all of life’s ups and downs reflected within its walls. Just think of all the hustle and bustle of hundreds of employees and patients, living and working within the many different departments, virtually stacked on top of one another in numerous busy floors. In any given day, a hospital sees people being born, people dying, people sleeping, eating, meeting, recovering, visiting, and some experiencing life-changing surgeries! That’s a lot of activity taking place in one building.

If you’ve been in a hospital lately, you may notice that, while there are many similarities to the hospitals you see on TV, hospitals in “real life” seem to be a bit less melodramatic than the ones in the prime time shows. Also, I'm not sure if the people in real hospitals are quite as flawless-looking as the ones in the shows... even the "patients" have their hair and make-up done, when they're on TV. However, real-life, everyday hospitals are still very interesting, dynamic places to work, and they offer a number of exciting health career opportunities. Even if you are not necessarily interested in treating patients as a nurse or a doctor, there may be an opportunity for you in IT, Accounting, Human Resources, or Executive Management at a hospital. Plus, hospitals are almost always hiring, even when corporations are laying off, because regardless of the state of the economy, people still get sick, and hospital care is in demand. The employment options at a hospital are abundant – check out the Hospital Profile for more information about hospital jobs!
