Three of 12 "Most Overrated Careers" are in the healthcare field. Physicians, surgeons, and psychiatrists ranked among the top "Most Overrated Careers" according to the new list released by CareerCast.com, which also recently ranked the Most Underrated Careers.
The only career that topped these three health careers as being most overrated, was the role of senior corporate executive (not necessarily in the healthcare field).
"While many of our overrated jobs pay well or carry a certain amount of cachet, they also have a downside," says Tony Lee, publisher, CareerCast.com. "Our most overrated career -- senior corporate executive - earns an average of $161,141.00 per year, but it holds the top spot as most overrated due to its high stress, shaky stability and consistently long hours that affect family time."
CareerCast's Overrated Jobs report pinpoints careers that the rest of world perceives to be the best, greatest careers, while the reality may be different, behind the scenes. For example, a surgeon's career (which ranked second on the list of most overrated careers) pays a high salary of $365,258 on average. However, that may not compensate for the stress of being responsible for the lives of others, the long hours and the physical demands of lengthy surgeries, and the many years of training required to practice surgery.
And physicians, who ranked third, and earn an average of $192,065 per year after completing many years of additional college and training, face increased regulation, lower compensation and the need to constantly stay abreast of medical developments in order to diagnose conditions and prescribe appropriate treatment.
Psychiatrists ranked fourth on the list of most overrated careers. No other health careers made the list, but other "overrated" careers included attorneys, architects, commercial airline pilots, flight attendants, and photojournalists.
To create a list of the most "overrated" jobs, CareerCast.com weighed stress, physical demands and both the current and future employment outlook more heavily than the other aspects of the careers ranked.
